Hanalei Profile

Overview

Hanalei is a tiny coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Hawaii. With a population of 473 people and just one neighborhood, Hanalei is the 53rd largest community in Hawaii.

Hanalei home prices are not only among the most expensive in Hawaii, but Hanalei real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Hanalei is neither predominantly blue-collar nor white-collar, instead having a mixed workforce of both blue-collar and white-collar jobs. Overall, Hanalei is a town of service providers, sales and office workers, and construction workers and builders. There are especially a lot of people living in Hanalei who work in food service (33.33%), office and administrative support (14.14%), and art, media, and design (9.09%).

Of important note, Hanalei is also a town of artists. Hanalei has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This concentration of artists helps shape Hanalei’s character.

A relatively large number of people in Hanalei telecommute to their jobs. Overall, about 13.98% of the workforce works from home. While this may seem like a small number, as a fraction of the total workforce it ranks among the highest in the country. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Another notable thing is that Hanalei is an extremely popular destination for tourists and seasonal residents. So much of the population is seasonal such that the town’s population swells significantly during the vacation season, and drops again when the season ends. Because of this, much of the local economy is centered around tourism; some businesses may be operated only during the high season. During the low season, year-round residents will notice that the city is a substantially quieter place to live.

Hanalei is also nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Quite often, nautical areas such as these attract visitors and locals who come to enjoy the scenery and various waterfront activities.

Compared to the rest of the country, citizens of Hanalei spend much less time in their cars: on average, their commute to work is only 13.13 minutes. This also means that noise and pollution levels in the town are less than they would otherwise be.

Hanalei is a small town, and as such doesn't have a public transit system that people use to get to and from their jobs every day.

Hanalei Demographics

The overall education level of Hanalei citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 32.85% of adults in Hanalei have at least a bachelor's degree, and the average American community has 21.84%.

The per capita income in Hanalei in 2018 was $24,451, which is low income relative to Hawaii, and lower middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $97,804 for a family of four. However, Hanalei contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Hanalei is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Hanalei home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Hanalei residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Important ancestries of people in Hanalei include English, Irish, German, Italian, and Dutch.

The most common language spoken in Hanalei is English. Other important languages spoken here include Pacific Island languages and Japanese.
