Fort Covington Profile

Overview

Fort Covington is a very small town located in the state of New York. With a population of 1,288 people and just one neighborhood, Fort Covington is the 679th largest community in New York. Much of the housing stock in Fort Covington was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some towns where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, Fort Covington is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Fort Covington is a town of service providers, transportation and shipping workers, and sales and office workers. There are especially a lot of people living in Fort Covington who work in office and administrative support (13.91%), law enforcement and fire fighting (10.95%), and food service (10.39%).

Also of interest is that Fort Covington has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

One interesting thing about the economy is that relatively large numbers of people worked from their home: 7.58% of the workforce. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce this is high compared to the rest of the county. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Setting & Lifestyle

Residents will find that the town is relatively quiet. This is because it is not over-populated, and it has fewer college students, renters, and young children - all of whom can be noisy at times. So, if you're looking for a relatively peaceful place to live, Fort Covington is worth considering.

Residents of the town have the good fortune of having one of the shortest daily commutes compared to the rest of the country. On average, they spend only 18.73 minutes getting to work every day.

As is often the case in a small town, Fort Covington doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

Fort Covington Demographics

In terms of college education, the citizens of Fort Covington rank slightly lower than the national average. 14.89% of adults 25 and older in Fort Covington have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, while 21.84% of adults have a 4-year degree or higher in the average American community.

The per capita income in Fort Covington in 2018 was $18,258, which is low income relative to New York and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $73,032 for a family of four. However, Fort Covington contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Fort Covington is an extremely ethnically-diverse town. The people who call Fort Covington home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Fort Covington residents report their race to be White, followed by Native American. Important ancestries of people in Fort Covington include Irish, French, French Canadian, Italian, and German.
