Saxman Profile

Overview

Saxman is a tiny coastal city (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Alaska. With a population of 385 people and just one neighborhood, Saxman is the 54th largest community in Alaska.

Saxman home prices are not only among the most expensive in Alaska, but Saxman real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Occupations and Workforce

Unlike some cities, Saxman isn’t mainly white- or blue-collar. Instead, the most prevalent occupations for people in Saxman are a mix of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, Saxman is a city of sales and office workers, transportation and shipping workers, and managers. There are especially a lot of people living in Saxman who work in management occupations (13.64%), sales jobs (10.61%), and office and administrative support (9.09%).

Setting & Lifestyle

It is a fairly quiet city because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Saxman has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Saxman has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Saxman than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Saxman may be for you.

One of the nice things about Saxman is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

Residents of the city have the good fortune of having one of the shortest daily commutes compared to the rest of the country. On average, they spend only 15.93 minutes getting to work every day.

For a small city, Saxman has a lot of people who use public transit to get to work, and those that do mostly ride the bus. This suggests that a real need for low-cost transportation in Saxman exists, and local transit is helping to meet that need.

Saxman Demographics

The population of Saxman has a very low overall level of education: only 9.58% of people over 25 hold a 4-year college degree or higher.

The per capita income in Saxman in 2018 was $27,408, which is lower middle income relative to Alaska, and middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $109,632 for a family of four. However, Saxman contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

Saxman is a very ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Saxman home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Saxman residents report their race to be Native American, followed by White. Important ancestries of people in Saxman include Irish, Norwegian, German, English, and Swedish.

The most common language spoken in Saxman is English. Other important languages spoken here include Native American languages and Spanish.
